May, 30, 1804,

Today I(Lewis) have been out with some of my men studying in the mid-western part of the country(present-day Kansas). We have been studying the setting, which is rather beautiful. In a forested area, we came upon a wolf. It was a beastly animal with color of black and white. It 70 centimetres high and looked to be between 30 and 40 pounds kg, with a long bushy tail. What a beautiful day it has been.

Today we found a raccoon. We decided to name it the Northern Raccoon. It is gray-brown or orange-brown. Its face is black with and outline of white, it also has a bushy tail. We found it near the Chariton River in Missouri. It lives in woodlands and can be found in cities. It is found in Southern Canada and most of the U.S. but, not in the Rocky Mountains. It is also found in central Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The raccoons name came from an Algonquin Indian word meaning "he scratches with his hands." That is what we found today.

Today we found the a dog that we named the Plains Gray Wolf. We found it West of the Mississippi River. The wolf was very large canid, usually grizzled gray, but showing great variation in color, ranging from white to black. Long, bushy tail with black tip. The wolf was about the same height as a dog.

ALEX RUSSO PD:3 4/8/08....

Its October 1, 1804, and its Sacagaweya here. The winter is approching and we are fiercly trying to get fort set up before winter strikes. Lewis and Clark have been busy studying the soil, trees, moss, and animal life. They have also been trading and trying to make friends with the different tribes as I guide them along teaching them things such as what and what not to eat. Four days after the first snowfall we arrived at Mandan tribe's villages where we plan to stay during the winter. Things seem to be going smoothly but we always have to on the lookout for a Suiox attack. The Missouri is frozen. Now all we have to do is survive the winter and move on trying to map the new land.

Alex and Hartung are so hood.

The trip was going okay. We all were so excited to get to see the Rockie Mountains. The captain was especially excited to see the rocky Mountains. Before we got to see them though, we came to a fork in the river. The captain thought that the southern branch was the correct one to lead them into Missouri but all the other men thought that the northern brach was the correct one. The northern branch didnt work so I took 3 men with me up the southern branch. I knew that if we saw the Great Falls that we were in Missouri for sure. The southern lead us to the Great Falls and beyond that we could see the Rocky Mountains.

The Grizzly land
Dear Journal,
We have been told by some Indians that in a few days we will encounter grizzly land. I do not worry to much about the grizzly bears because I am unimpressed by what the indains say still.
Later that day...
I nearly died just a few minutes ago! I guess that the indains were not lyng when they said that the Grizzly land was dangerous. When we got into the Grizzly county we saw 2 grizzly bears right away. We injured one of the bears while we were trying to kill it but it got away. After we did this the other bear got really mad and chased me 80 yards before the men could reload their guns and shoot at it tillit died. For now on till we get out of Grizzly land I will be stayin on the ship. Right after they killed the grizzly Clark just laughed at me. I guess when it comes to wildlife son'e make them mad or you could pay.
yours,
Lewis

Dear Journal,

It is the tenth day that Clark and I have been scouting separately. I have finally found the Great Falls, making me the first white man to actually see them. But, to my great suprise, they aren't five different, separate falls, like the Indians said. It is actually a 12-mile strech. It's going to take longer than I thought to get around.

June 3 1805,

Today we came to a very misterious fork in the missouri river. We spsent most of the day trying to figure out where the forks lead. The Captains believe that the south fork is the missouri river. This should take us to the Rocky Mountais; or so they say. We hope to cross the Rockies before the snow starts to fall in autumn. However most of the men thought the northern branch was the one we should take. We can not make a wrong choice. We have sent out scouting parties to search for the great falls. It is the only way to tell if we are on the right track.

Clark and I have made it very far on our journey. Today we came to a fork in the river and don't know which path to take. Both sides are equal, but I am persuaded that the southern fork will lead us to the Rockies. Most men disagree, that the northern fork is the better path to follow. We cannot risk making the wrong choice, so myself and three other men have decided to follow the southern branch, and hopefully finding the Great Falls that would assure us that we are on the Missouri River.

Dear diary,
Today snow started to fall. Theres not much game left. The food supply is running low I dont know if im going to make it. The americans met a group of indians who will bring horses for the journy across the bitterroot mountains. The horses almost starved today. Then the captian set up camp. Now its morning and we found the river. October 7.

The journey has been amazing as we arrived at Fort Mandan. We've been trading with the Indians. Sacagawea and her baby son, Jean Baptiste, will travel with the expedition when we leave Fort Mandan. It'll be very helpful to have indians on the trip with us. We decided to write a report about what we've encountered so far. We dispatched it and about a dozen expedition membersplus 108 botanical specimens and 68 mineral specimens went to St.Louis. Our report got around, even to President Jefferson! After a long winter, the ice started melting and it was time to restart our journey across the U.S.

Today we we met the Teton Sioux tribe. The tribe greeted the expidition and our gifts. We gave them a military coat, a cocked hat, and a medal. One of the chiefs' from the tribe thought that the gifts that we gave weren't enough and he demanded our boat for the price of the passage. Then the indians became angry and threatening. Then Louis turned the keelboat's swivil gun at the indians and Clark drew his sword. But then both of the sides backed down and left each other alone. Jefferson's hopes with friendly relations with the siox failed. We continued on our journey though with winter approaching.

August 14, 1805

Just days ago Lewis spotted an Indian on horseback. We now know finally it was a Shoshone, the first we've seen since Fort Mandan.
In an astonishing turn of events the Indian chief of the Shoshone ending up being Sacagawea's brother. We have must to thank to the man for he gave us several horse "we'll need them to reach the pacific." I am worried for the fact that the price of a horse is going up and is becoming harder to obtain. We have little to no hope
of reaching the Pacific without horses. We have started off again
in constant search of the
mysterious Pacific. With any hope
we'll reach it in due time. The
mens attitude is always changing from tired to excited. I look forward to destination not the hard journey along the way.

Always hoping for the best
-
Clark

Dear Journal,

We finaly encountered some indians. Trade went well and we exchanged greetings and gifts. Just as Jefferson told us to, we made friends with the tribe.
Sergeant Charles Floyd died not to long ago. But the good thing is he was the first US soldire to die west of the Mississippi. Poor guy died of appendictis. I'm hoping nobody else will die on our Journey.
August is almost over, and we've reached the eastern edge of the great plains. We've found tons of beaver, elk, buffalo, and deer. We're heading toward the heart of Sioux.
We met some more Indians in the Yankton Sioux. They seemed disapointed, however, with our gifts. They soon got over it, and warned us about further tribes.

Well, soon, I'll write again. (maybe) =)

When the Indians became threatening, the expedition prepared to meet force with force: Clark drew his sword, and i turned the keelboat's swivel gun on the Sioux. At the last moment both sides pulled back, and the crisis was over. Nevertheless, the expedition had failed to deliver on Jefferson's hopes for friendly relations with the Sioux. The Americans headed up the river?with a potential enemy behind them and a fast-approaching winter ahead.

We started at St. Louis and started to make our way to the Pacific. We met many idian tribes and came across and interpreter for us to understand their language. Also along our journey are boat overturned but at the last second our indain interpreter Saqagawiah got all of the important stuff first so they would not be destroyed in the water. We got the boat upright again and fixed what was damaged. We almost started a war on our journey but we over come the differences with the tribe.
